Bird watching Subbetica Geopark
Bird watching Subbetica Geopark is one of the secret jewel of Andalucia wildlife nature.
In a limestone environment, you will visit geological jewels such as El lanchar, karren, stony outcrops, sinkholes… the home of birds such as the Bonelli’s eagles, the royal eagle, the griffon vulture, the peregrine falcon and the eagle owl which make this area the ideal setting for hikers and birdwatchers in spring and autumn.
This protected was declared natural park by the Andalusian Goverment in 1988, steeped both ecologically and landscape view, with an area of 31,568 ha. Since 2005 it is part of the International Network of Geoparks.
The most characteristic feature of mid-mountain area is its beautiful karstic and limestone surface. The terrain, steep slopes and elevations, forms beautiful narrow valleys. The vegetation is rich in oaks, maples, etc. One of the greatest attractions is the existence of a large number of endemic species and other kinds of plants whose bloom happen throughout the year, such as narcissus, lilies, orchids and peonies; with them highlights a number of bushes of outstanding natural beauty such as mastic and acebuche among others.
The Natural Park is home of the highest peak in the province of Cordoba “La Tiñosa”, which reaches 1,570 meters. The mount “El Picacho” in “Sierra de Cabra” is called the Andalusia Balcony and can be observed from this unique vantage point on a clear day cloud, not only the most important summits of the Subbética, but even “Sierra Nevada”. The “Sierra de Cabra” offers interesting geological formations as Lapiaz of Lanchares or sinkhole de la Nava. The Natural Park Subbéticas Sierras presents varied hiking and mountain routes that will contemplate the great singular beauty of this space, routes that allow the knowledge of fauna and flora of great variety.
Most representative birds here are interesting species as the griffon vulture, black wheatear, blue rock thrush and red-billed chough. If you have a little luck, Bonelli’s or real eagle could appear.
